Shinto Shrine with garden right behind the castle

Hotoku Ninomiya Shrine

The Shinto Shrine was built more than 120 years ago and enshrines the famous agriculturist and philosopher Ninomiya Sontoku, a person who lived in this area. It is said, the stones they used to build the ground of the Shrine, were taken from a rice storehouse, that the spirituality of the Shrine opened himself in order to save thousands of starving people.

The Shrine as it is now, has two entrances. One behind the castle with a small wooden gate and one on the side of the Odawara Castle moat. Japanese Shinto Shrines can not be entered without attending special ceremonies. But this unique Shinto Shrine offers different experiences in English and German for foreign people which are only possible in Odawara.
